How to track your tips (and why your real hourly matters)

Updated June 2026

If you work for tips, your income is invisible by default. No paystub captures the cash in your apron, and card tips arrive mixed into paychecks days later. Most tipped workers — servers, bartenders, baristas, delivery drivers — genuinely cannot say what they earn per hour. That number decides which job to keep and which shifts are worth taking, so it's worth 10 seconds a night to know it.

What to record after every shift

The number that matters: what you walked with

Walked-with = cash tips + card tips − tip-outs. That's your real take for the night. Divide it by hours and you have your real hourly rate — the honest version, after tip-outs, that no paystub will ever show you.

Two shifts can feel identical and pay completely differently. A "great Saturday" with a heavy tip-out and an extra hour of side work is often worse than a quiet Tuesday close. You only see that in the numbers.

What tracking unlocks

  1. Job comparisons. Two offers? Track two weeks at each. The hourly settles arguments instantly.
  2. Shift strategy. Which nights actually pay? Most people's gut is wrong by a wide margin.
  3. Budgeting on variable income. Knowing your real weekly average is the difference between rent math and rent anxiety.
  4. Proof of income. Apartments and lenders ask cash earners for documentation. A clean log is your paper trail.
  5. Taxes. US tipped workers may deduct up to $25,000/year of qualified reported tips for 2025–2028 — but only documented tips. Details here.

Make it a ritual, not a chore

The system only works if logging is effortless. Whatever you use — a notes app, a spreadsheet, or a purpose-built tracker — the bar is: under 15 seconds, the same night, every shift. If it takes longer, you'll quit by week two.

TipJar is built around that bar: log cash, card, tip-out, and hours in about 10 seconds, watch a real jar fill toward your weekly goal, and see your true hourly after every shift. Free to log forever, no account, your data never leaves your phone. Learn more →
